A country which has around 21 million of its people living with a disability of one kind or the other must not be found wanting in providing a good education for such a teeming population. This number translates to 2.1% of the entire population of India. Consequently, the country is not found wanting in ensuring that this population gets educated. The issue would, however, be wrapped around the effort of all authorities in charge of this: whether commendable or not commendable. Moreover, it would be appropriate to examine the role of all and sundry in ensuring that the population of the differently abled gets equipped with education just as their abled counterparts.Over the years, the effort of the government has been geared towards providing education for special children by giving access to aid, scholarships, and other incentives for the special children. In 1995, an act was enacted to ensure that education for differently abled children is promptly established. This provided for free education for special children and in that wise paved way for the establishment of special schools.
The schools for special children must be equipped with amenities needed for those children and that was complemented for in the established schools by the government. This, together with other projects, was enacted by the government to ensure a smooth education system for special children. These projects were also enacted to bridge the gap that may exist between the differently abled children and the abled ones. Added to this, the Indian government also provides training for the educators in order to get them equipped.Citizens, however, also need to complement the effort of the government in ensuring proper and sound education for special children in India. Individuals that would be educating the children need to shun prejudice; in essence, they should also get themselves equipped accordingly in terms of the necessary education and in terms of the approach to teaching the special children. The onus will lie on the educators even more than on the government as they have a direct relationship with the children. The level of patience of educators must arise in dealing with special children. Also, understanding of the psyche and psychological behavior of those children should accompany any educational degree the educators would be holding. In addition to the effort of the government and the citizens in ensuring a good education for the differently abled children, a good consultation service, as well as a good feedback system, must be established for the children cum the parents and guardians of the children. These parties know where there is a lacuna in the various exerted efforts, and so first-hand advice would be passed to the personnel in charge of the children’s education for improvement and for better services and innovation.
